TANK (short film by Stu Maschwitz)

Published on May 23, 2018 Red Giant

"Introducing Tank, a new short film from Red Giant’s Chief Creative Officer, Stu Maschwitz. In a visual homage to vector arcade games of the 80’s (like Battlezone and Star Wars), Tank tells the story of a team of pilots that must take on a weapon of mass destruction in a battle to save their world.

Putting aside current 3D modeling techniques, Stu looked to the past and built the world of Tank entirely in Adobe After Effects, using math, code, and hundreds of hours of painstaking animation work. Watch the Making of Tank to learn more about Stu’s journey in telling this visually unique story: https://youtu.be/WRkYP7wnD40"

NEBULAE - a cosmic meditation

NEBULAE - a cosmic meditation from Teun van der Zalm on Vimeo.

"A cloud that veils one of nature's secret places. This is a stellar nursery, a place where stars are born. They condense by gravity from gas and dust until their temperatures become so high that they begin to shine. Such clouds mark the births of stars as others bear witness to their deaths." - Carl Sagan, Cosmos: A Personal Voyage Episode 1: The Shores of the Cosmic Ocean

Fraktaal

Fraktaal from Julius Horsthuis on Vimeo.

"‘Fraktaal’ is a fantasy sci-fi short without a story.

I borrowed the aesthetic from Science Fiction films, and isolated that into something that I hope will stimulate the imagination into its own spacefaring journey.

It so happens that I’m a lazy animator.

Using fractals, I can conjure up entire worlds without having to draw or model anything. These shapes hide in the formulas, they exist in a mathematical reality, all I need to do is explore those worlds and make them reveal themselves. For me, that discovery has become one of the most thrilling aspects of digital filmmaking.

FIRST ANIMATED POSTCARD SENT BY ELECTRONIC MAIL 1984 BELL LABS

Published on Aug 3, 2013 museumofcomm·13 videos

"In 1984 a group from AT&T Bell Labs gave a presentation on the 5620 (AKA the BLIT) in Paris. A 3B2 UNIX host named 'alice' came along as the 5620's file server and was also used to UUCP mail with a system back at the labs. This electronic animated postcard was sent back to the labs via UUCP during the group's trip to France.

Interested in the BLIT? The 'layers' windowing environment which the BLIT uses was later adopted and modified for the Plan 9 operating system. Plan 9 is available for free from bell-labs.com.
